Steve Bannon, Tucker Carlson and... Liz Truss? Exploring the Former PM's Audition for the Maga Movement

Liz Truss, began the first edition of her YouTube show with a pledge to unmask "the evil-doers" attempting to weaken Western democracies. Truss elaborated she would reveal how an "worldwide alliance of progressives operate to subvert democracy and the public's choice."

"Our focus will be on the Maga phenomenon and understand how it can be achieved in Britain," the former PM stated. "We'll be talking to the leading lights of the Make America Great Again campaign."

In advance of the show's launch, there was one particularly enthusiastic supporter. "This marks the start of a kind of transformation," stated the controversial US journalist. His media outlet Just the News will host the ex-PM's new podcasts.

Building Connections in the Maga-Verse

UK-based allies, including a counselor supportive of Reform, have also helped her launch the Truss's program. The production is professional, though simple. The show has attracted 10,000 subscribers in her debut week and her first episode achieved 67,000 views across the same period.

It is a small opening, but in partnering with John Solomon, Truss is being thrust into a well-developed right-wing media network producing and amplifying Make America Great Again themes. Key fixations include alleged censorship by the established press and a desire to dismantle a conspiratorial 'deep state' – which the ex-PM holds responsible for the rapid conclusion of her short and troubled leadership.

"The platform is not famous beyond the pro-Trump media sphere, but it does have credibility there, mostly due to John Solomon, who offers opinions on pro-Trump shows like Bannon's 'War Room' podcast and has even spoken with the former president," commented Alex Hinton, who has extensively researched the Trumpist political wave.

A Controversial Partner

Her effort to transplant Maga media to the United Kingdom has aligned her more closely to controversial figures such as Solomon.

He established the platform after scrutiny after he was accused of pushing false stories about Joe Biden's anticorruption effort in the Eastern European nation, as well as contentious articles about one-time diplomat to the region.

These allegations were amplified across the pro-Trump outlets, with Solomon serving as a frequent visitor on the prominent Fox News show. The former president personally promoted the journalist's work.

The journalist published the allegations regarding Ukraine in a number of opinion pieces for the publication the Hill, where he had already been re-designated as an opinion writer following internal criticism over his articles. His narratives were pivotal in the then-president's request for the Ukrainian government to look into the Biden family in 2019. This pressure culminated in impeachment charges against the president. Solomon mentioned his support for Truss's project on a show he co-hosts on the right-wing channel, a political media platform that is the base for the conservative firebrand former adviser Steve Bannon and on which Tucker Carlson also is seen. Truss has already interviewed the political operative on one of her first podcasts.

Through her association with Solomon and Just the News, she has become a small part in a much wider network of right-wing publications that frequently cross-promote stories.

Solomon's own programs have frequently included personalities such as Mike Benz, a political voice whose disparagement of the foreign aid agency was used by the X owner as justification for dismantling the government body.

An International Strategy

Even though her awkward delivery and career difficulties have drawn derision within the UK, certain American analysts do not dismiss her attempts to reinvent herself as a British branch of the Maga media.

"Online platforms knows no borders," he stated. "There is a certain milieu within which content circulates – sometimes taking an extreme form and sometimes less so – but which is connected."

Hinton said the expansion of the online right in the UK lately meant the "chance to have a larger effect is considerable."
